A gift to children and parents alike, Stan Lai’s The Whale Library invites you on an enchanted journey toward knowledge and discovery!

Told in his own unique way, Stan Lai’s bedtime stories have been creating dreams and wonder for his daughters. Now, even his granddaughters have become spellbound audience. After his first children’s play, The Blue Horse, Stan Lai teams up with his daughter Celeste and his granddaughter Oddiyana and together they present The Whale Library! Join us this summer on a magical journey and venture deep into the ocean!

“Some people may think it’s very easy to write and direct a children’s play. I think that’s a great misconception. I have two daughters myself, and when they grew up, they, like other girls, asked me to tell them stories. So I’ve been telling them improvised stories that kept going forward. One after another, it was like passing a series of tests, looking for endings that not only made sense, but were engaging and interesting at the same time. They would not settle for less.

This has really been a process of discovery for me. As the stories grew, I found what I wanted to tell them and what they would like to listen to the most.

Then I found out that what they wanted to hear was the sincerest story; it was the purest emotion and the most unbound imagination that they were expecting.”

Synopsis

“Welcome to The Whale Library!”

Stan Lai’s new children’s play tells the story of Mi Er, the daughter of a fisherman, who accidentally discovers a most fantastic library located inside a giant whale, where one can read all about the world and its history! Mi Er’s father, however, firmly believes the whale is up to no good according to the local legend. Meanwhile, mischievous monkeys from a nearby island are stealing books to burn from the library. To save the magical whale library, Mi Er must embark on an adventure…
