About The Village
The Village was based on the coming-of-age of renowned Taiwanese television producer Wang Wei-chung. Through the intertwining stories of three families in a military dependents’ village, the play depicts a neighborhood life and eating habits and how 600,000 soldiers and their dependents who retreated from mainland China to Taiwan in 1949 longed for their homeland. By tracing the lives of three generations, it reflects both social transition and the changing environment in Taiwan. Stan Lai acknowledged that he had heard more than 100 stories about military dependents’ villages. After pondering on this topic for a year, he decided to create this particular story. Lai explains, “Wang Wei-chung came from a military dependents’ village. In the span of two years, he told me many stories, detailing the personalities of his neighbors, the poverty and misery of that time … his tales were just like those from the Arabian Nights. I was motivated to create a play that is worthy of this historical era.”
In fact, no matter whether in Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land or A Dream Like A Dream, Lai is a consummate master at using his unique theatre language to express the joys and sorrows of an epoch. Although The Village is a fictional name, “the village” actually refers to military dependents’ villages unique to Taiwan, places where soldiers and their dependents from different provinces live at close proximity, speaking different dialects and practicing different customs and traditions. With the passing of time, not only were people homesick but they also developed complicated feelings about their homeland. Lai was deeply moved by this nostalgia, which led to the creation of this three-hour stage production that in turn pulls at the heartstrings of Chinese communities worldwide.
