About Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land

For more than thirty years, Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land has been regarded as the most widely acclaimed masterpiece of Taiwanese playwright/director Stan Lai and his Performance Workshop. Numerous stars, including Brigitte Lin, Chin Shih-Chieh, Huang Lei, and many others, have performed in various versions of the play since its premiere in 1986.

March 2016 marked the 30th anniversary of the play’s premiere. Three versions of the masterwork were performed at Theatre Above throughout the month. And from then on every March will be celebrated as the Secret Love Month, which will be devoted to the performance of Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land.

The Exclusive Shanghai Version will be produced at Theatre Above in March 2017. This resident version of the piece will make it more accessible to the Shanghai audience, inviting more people to see the timeless play of Stan Lai.

Synopsis⊙

Two plays—one a bawdy retelling of a classic Chinese fable, the other a poignant story of a couple separated in the wake of China’s 1949 revolution—collide onstage when two acting troupes accidentally book the same theatre for rehearsals. Amid the chaos, squabbles and comical jabs at theatre life, the two plays begin to mysteriously intertwine, their epic themes calling to each other across the centuries in a blend of modern realism and Peking opera.
